How to actually make a shared kitchen work.

Priya NairJul 14, 20263 min read

Chore charts fail in shared kitchens because they assume everyone agrees on what "clean" means. They rarely do, and the chart just becomes a source of arguments instead of a fix.

What actually worked: everyone gets one labeled shelf and one labeled fridge drawer that's entirely theirs, no negotiation needed. Shared items live in the middle, and whoever uses the last of something replaces it within the week.

Most kitchen conflicts aren't about mess. They're about ownership nobody defined.

The five-minute Sunday reset — everyone does one lap of the kitchen before the week starts — does more than any rotating chore schedule ever did.
